Course Description
How have people thought about cinema, this popular medium the twentieth century gave rise to? This course is an attempt to explore this inquiry. We shall investigate this matter by looking into the many important articles in Film Studies involving figures such as, Hugo Munsterberg, Sergei Eisenstein, Andre Bazin, Siegfried Kracauer…. We shall be tackling the classical film theorists, also consulting films they grappled with during their times, and, when appropriate, rethinking their claims with films of our time. We shall also explore writings of the different approaches to Film Studies that surfaced later in the last century: articles on the auteur theory, on genre studies, on political/ideological analysis, and others.
